Philadelphia Transportation

In common with most modern cities, Philadelphia now offers an excellent transport infrastructure, with good quality public services operated by the city and plenty of private options too. This makes Philadelphia transportation some of the most reliable and comprehensive on the East coast, and makes getting around in the city a breeze.

Most of the major hotels in the city offer private shuttle services to and from the airport. Depending on the hotel, these are either free, or offered at a small cost, and provide the best way of getting to the place where you are staying. If your hotel does not offer a free shuttle service, there are still plenty of options available, from the Philadelphia transportation bureau including regular buses and train services that connect the airport and the city.

There are thousands of taxis and cabs plying their trade in the city, and for most visitors, they are the most convenient form of Philadelphia transportation. Rates for taxis are comparable with most other US cities, and the drivers have to pass an exam to give them confidence to take you on any route that you are likely to need. They can generally find the quickest ways through any traffic problems, and offer a variety of opinions as they drive.

If you would rather explore the city at your own pace, or head out into the surrounding areas, then renting a vehicle is probably the best idea. This will allow you to avoid needing to use public owned Philadelphia transportation, and give you the freedom to go where you want when you want to. Most of the major companies such as Hertz, Dollar, and Alamo offer car rental in Philadelphia at competitive prices, and you can either book online, or pick up your car hire at the airport although this will generally cost a bit more, and restrict your choice somewhat.

The roads around the city are easy to follow, and most important attractions are well signposted and can be found. AAA produces a range of maps that will show you where to go, and many rental cars now include satellite navigation as standard.
